He was 63. His mistress was with him.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt

April 12th is the 66th anniversary of the death of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.  FDR was in his 4th term of office, the only president ever to serve that long.    He was only 63.  As a boy, I remember one of the slogans used in his last election campaign.  It was a cliche’.   It was effective.    “Don’t change horses in the middle of a stream.”  The stream was World War II.    Roosevelt died with his ostensible- secret mistress, Lucy Mercer, by his side.  They were at the President’s “Little White House” in Warm Springs, Georgia.  Historians write that when the President passed, Mercer hurriedly left to avoid a possible scandal.   The President’s wife, Eleanor, came from Washington.    The cause of death was a cerebral hemorrhage (a stroke).   A drug that might have prevented the President’s stroke did not come into use until about 5 years later.  It’s an anti-coagulant called Warfarin or Coumadin.  Many use it today to reduce the chances of a stroke.   Finally, as I reflect on this day in 1945, I realize that as I’ve grown older  my concept of what is old changes with each year.    Now  63-year- old people are just kids to me.  In 1945,  I was the kid .

  1. V.E.G. Says:

Franklin Delano Roosevelt died with his mistress by his side. Over one and a half millenia ago, Lancelot died with his mistress Guinevere by his side. FDR is like Sir Lancelot of the White House while Lucy Mercer Rutherford is like Lady Guinevere of the White House.
