What’s in it for me?

Is the basis of most religions, “what’s in it for me?”   For example, the Christian religion appeals to our desire to have a life after this one.   John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son that whosover believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”  Is that an appeal to our “what’s in it for me” feelings?  You can go down the line with the world’s major religions and find these appeals to the selfish nature of the human species.  There are those whose altruistic natures inspire us..and rightly so.    But are they truly altruistic with no thought of a reward in “Heaven”?
