Labor Day

In an exchange of messages with one of my colleagues at WSB-Television, he told me that he would be working Labor Day.  He added, perhaps with tongue-in-cheek, that he thought that laboring was the point of Labor Day.  Actually, its purpose is to celebrate the economic and social contributions of workers.  A New York leader of the American Federation of Labor first proposed in 1882 that the United States have a Labor Day.  New York was in the vanguard of states that first adopted his proposal.    It was 12 years later before it became a federal holiday.  Labor day is designated as the first Monday in September.  So to my colleagues at WSB-TV and others who labor on Labor Day, thank you!   Some of us have been there…and done that many, many tmes.
