“To be honest with you….”

A meeting of the local city council was re-broadcast tonight (Monday) on   cable TV.    One of the people speaking represented a contractor seeking  approval for a concrete pouring project.  The mayor and council members questioned the contractor about details of the project and some of the objections raised by residents who live nearby.   Several times, the contractor began his answer with “to be honest with you”.     The answer seems to imply that he isn’t always honest,  but probably not a completely accurate inference.   There was a time we learned that as soon as a politician said, “to be honest with you”, a reporter should expect a lie, to be honest with you.
