Polling,Politics and Racing

This runner brings his politicing to a 5K race Sunday near Athens, Georgia.  He’s promoting the Tea Party and Newt Gingrich’s candidacy.    As far as I know, there was no polling of runners. As a teenager, my first memory of polling was Gallup predicting Dewey would beat Truman   We know how that turned out.   My first memory of polling during my years at WSB-TV is when they were very unscientific.  We stood outside what we guessed was a geographical cross-section of voting precincts.  These came to be known as exit polls.  Were they accurate?  Sometimes yes…sometimes no.   As we have learned through the years, the only pollls that mean much are the final counts on voting day, but they do give politicians and reporters fodder for talk.
