Showmanship instead of statesmanship.

Websters defines a statesman or stateswoman as “a person skilled in the science of government and prominent in national and foreign affairs.”     A friend of mine was complaining today that we don’t have any statesmen seeking the Presidency of the United States.  He believes they’re all showmen who will try to figure things out if and when they become President.  Is that a bad thing?  After all, how many Presidents can you name who grew into the job and became admirable chief executives?  We’ll never know…they’ll never know in today’s show biz society unless they’re enough of a showman to sell themselves to the electorate.
