Untangling my feelings

A church in northwest Atlanta was overflowing Monday as friends and family of Jim the “Snake” Rasnake came to say goodbye.  Jim died unexpectly following addominal surgery.   We celebrated  the life of the retired 76-year-old stockbroker as many things  to many people.  The parking spaces around the church and adjoining streets were packed.  So was the sanctuary.   Just before the services began, a gentleman I guess to be about Jim’s age asked if he could sit in the space beside me.  Of course I welcomed him.    I introduced myself and asked him how he knew Jim.   He told me that he and Jim were members of the same church and were  students at the University of Georgia during some of the same years.  I knew Jim primarily as a running buddy.  We didn’t talk enough about the many other facets of his life.  I now find myself  wishing we had… and wishing I had told him more often how much I valued his friendship and the spirit of the “Snake”.
