Alec Evans Nephew

A registered letter from convicted murderer Evans’ nephew came in the mail today.   Evans was convicted in the 1964 murders of 3 Gwinnett County Officers.  His nephew pointed out that the jury found Evans guilty of murdering only one of them.   My recollection is that it was a strategic move by the prosecution.  If Evans had not been given the death penalty, they would have had 2 other chances to send Evans to death row.   As it turned out, the Supreme Court later threw out then Georgia’s death penatly law downgrading Evans’ sentence to life. The modified legislation is now back on the books.    Evans’ nephew writes that the 85-year-old is nearing the end of his life and wants me to visit him in a south Georgia prison.  I’m thinking about it.

Both Alec Evans and Venson Williams death penalties were overturned on Court appeals because all potential jurors opposed to the death penalty were excluded, which was a violation of the Supreme Court’s Witherspoon ruling.
