On-line “reporters”

In a class I was teaching a few weeks ago, we were discussing “on-line” reporting.  These are reporters who never go where the stories are, but rely on communicating with others via the phone, web or word-of-mouth.  One student cited a web-site that, she said, regularly “breaks stories”.     What do you think of them?, another student asked.   I don’t know what to think.   However, we at WSB-Television, regularly get tips and hear rumors.   If we went on the air with these without due dilligence, I expect we’d break more stories too.   My point is that it’s easy to report rumors.    If one of them turns out to be true, wonder how many are not?    Anyone keeping score?
