One of Metro Atlanta’s counties has begun a crackdown on the parents of truant children. DeKalb county sheriff’s deputies have begun picking up parents whose children missed too much school. Deputies arrested and shackled two mothers Thursday and took them to jail. Prosecutors say they’ll ask for warrants after eight unexcused absences. Statistics show that nine out of ten prison inmates in Georgia are high school dropouts. Truancy could be the beginning. Perhaps the parents going to jail will give them a realistic preview of what they hope their children will never see. We can hope.
