Sports without writers and talkers

Sports has long had a symbiotic relationship with writers and talkers. Without the writers and talkers, few people likely would care about sports from the professional level on down. It’d be like the pickup games at the Y where only the participants and a few others would take notice. On the other hand, sports has become one of the biggest selling products on TV, radio and the print media. It’s certainly a mutually beneficial relationship. The media men and women who specialize in sports wouldn’t have a job without the athletes. I’m reminded of this truism each year as we cycle through the seasons of baseball, football and basketball..not to mention tennis, golf, and others. I once did play-by-play, color and television reports on sports. Off mike, we often called the sports department the “toy store”. Regardless of age, everyone should have at least one toy.
