Do voters care about moral character?

MarkSanford-SouthCarolina-5-8-13This Associated Press picture shows former South Carolina Governor and Congressman Mark Sanford celebrating his return to Congress following a special election. Sanford’s victory came after many felt his political career was over because of an extra-marital affair. But enough voters didn’t seem to care about what he did in his “personal” life. Those voters apparently were willing to overlook, perhaps forgive, his behavior as long as they thought he could do the job in Congress better than his opponent. It reminds me of what I once overheard backstage at a political rally just before a candidate was to make his speech. I doubt he knew I heard him say to a member of his staff, “let’s go shear the sheep.” He had his shears out…again and again.
