The courts

There are some courts that could vastly improve their efficiency and have greater respect for a person’s time. In the military, there is a truism, “hurry up and wait”. This is also true in many court systems. It applies to people called who might serve on a jury and people subpoenaed before a judge on non-violent charges. For example, all people scheduled to appear before a judge on a particular day are told to be there at 9 a.m. However, their appearances are spread throughout the day. Such a system is counter productive. For example if a mother or father is appearing on a child-support case, it’s sometimes because the parent is not earning enough to pay. So he or she will sit there away from their job waiting for the judge to hear their case. Couldn’t the court operate on an appointment schedule? At the minimum, give the offender a window of time from 9 to 11 a.m….1 to 3 p.m.? Why not?
