Methodist…Holy Catholic Church..

I had occasion to be in a United Methodist Church this past weekend. As part of the service, the minister asked the congregagates to stand for “responsive reading”. Part of the Apostle’s creed we recited read, “I believe in the Holy Catholic Church.” Believing in the Holy Catholic Church may have been accurate two or three centuries after the death of Jesus when Christianity was non-denominational. Now it might be more appropriate to remove, “I believe in the Holy Catholic Church”….unless you do.

  1. Deanna Says:

That line in the Apostles’ Creed is “catholic” with a small “c” which means the universal, united church of Christians, not “Catholic” with a capital “C” which signifies the Catholic church as headed by the pope.

(Whew! That year and a half I just spent in theology school at Emory just paid off!)
