We get wrapped up too much in ourselves.

August 18, 2013

I pray God will always remind me that so many others are bearing burdens well beyond mine.

This morning, I awakened to

August 17, 2013

the sound of “Zippity do-dah” playing in my mind. There is no sunshine…no blue bird on my shoulder….but my body was telling me it was going to be a wonderful day. That was about 5:45 a.m. My voice appeared to be a full strength. It’s now been a good 6 hours with my first signs that the upside is beginning. Thank you Lord!!!

She returned with a push-chair

August 14, 2013

My wife, Gisela, and I went for another walk today with the idea of increasing the time from yesterday. However at about 15 minutes, I could hardly breathe. I had to sit on a utility container in our neighborhood. She hurried home and came back with a push-chair. It’s with smaller wheels than a wheel-chair and requires someone to push from behind. She pushed me home. Thank you Lord for Gisela!

My wife and I went for a “walk” today~

We “walked” in our neighborhood….baby steps…not very far…a little more than 10 minutes.

I gets weary and sick of trying….ON THE OTHER HAND…

August 10, 2013

“I gets weary and sick of tryin’…tired of livin’, but feared of dyin’ are lyrics written by Oscar Hammerstein for Jerome Kern’s music in “Showboat”. “Ole Man River” is magnificently performed by Paul Robeson, among others. I hear the lyrics over and over in my mind as my struggles to recover from open heart surgery continue with seemingly little progress. ON THE OTHER HAND, I RECOGNIZE THE BENEFITS OF POSITIVE THINKING AND PRAYERS. MY FAITH AND YOUR PRAYERS SUSTAIN ME. THANK YOU! Don

Ray Moore’s writing….

August 9, 2013

One of the many reasons I admired the late Ray Moore is his writing. One of the last projects we worked together is titled, “The Stones of Bastogne Turn Sixty”. It details the heroics of the 10th Armored Division, a part of Patton’s Third Army command. Ray was a member of the 10th Armored. He built the video piece around surviving members of the 10th Armored who returned to Bastogne in 2004 to a celebration of the 1944 event. Ray always gave you memorable lines. For example, he described the German counterattack, the battle of the Bulge, as “Hitler’s last bloody spasm”. Ray also wrote about the soldiers in that very cold December as “bearing the unbearable cold”. If you’re ever at the Patton museum in Fort Knox,Kentucky, you’ll find Ray’s pieces. Push a button. You can see and hear my friend’s extraordinary talent.

Losing 16 pounds in one day…

August 8, 2013

Following open heart surgery to repair a leaky valve, my body began to retain fluids…too much fluids. It was interfering with my ability to breathe. So my cardiologist prescribed a diuretic. The daily dosage had some effect but not enough. So yesterday morning, he increased the dosage two and a half times. Wow! It worked…perhaps more than we expected. In a little more than 24 hours, my body eliminated 16 pounds of fluids. I can breathe better, but the quick elimination has left me very weak. The body is a delicately balanced, miraculous creation. God’s going to get mine back into balance…soon I pray.

Tomorrow’s going to be

August 7, 2013

a better day! Hallelujah!!!

In sickness and in health…

August 6, 2013

As I kept 3 different medical appointments today (Monday), I watched as several couples came into the waiting room. More often than not, it was the woman who was the care giver. It was the man who was there to see the doctor. Looking at each couple brought a smile to my face as I imagined how long they had been together, how much they cared. Decades ago, when they spoke those vows, “in sickness and in health”, did they ever really imagine that this day would come? Devotion is a beautiful thing!

I’m mystified.

August 5, 2013

I’m mystified about why I’m having so much trouble breathing as I continue trying to recuperate from my heart valve surgery. Three medical appointments in a row Monday, 3 weeks after Dr. Bob Guyton repaired the leaking valve. I solicit your prayers. Thanks! Don
